Anxiety Therapy / Counselling – what are some of the ways to manage anxiety?

The term anxiety refers to a feeling of uneasy. I feel that it is safe to say that when faced with a stressful situation everybody feels a slight bit of anxiety. Typical examples of this are before taking an exam or when going for a job interview. These examples of slight anxiety are a normal reaction to situations such as these but when these feelings go deeper and you find yourself getting anxious over every aspect of your life then it is a good idea to seek additional help.

The results of numerous studies into anxiety demonstrate that one in ten people throughout the UK will suffer from the effects of constant anxiety. Everyday life is often interrupted due to this and you will find it hard to get on with everyday tasks. If this describes the situation that you are currently in and your life is being affected by anxiety then it is important that you visit your GP as your anxiety could be
linked to an underlying condition.

If you are constantly suffering the effects of anxiety then there is a good chance that this could be the result of a major mental health problem such as depression, which, like your anxiety, will just get progressively worse. By contacting your GP they will be able to identify both physical and psychiatric problems that could be the result of you suffering from anxiety. To help your GP do this they will listen to a description of your symptoms and may carry out a physical examination if they feel it to be necessary. This may all be done along with a blood test to rule out your anxiousness being associated with a thyroid problem.

If you are diagnosed as having an anxiety disorder then you will need to start treatment for it as soon as possible. The way in which your anxiety disorder is treated is through therapy. There are two main ways in which you are able to undergo this anxiety therapy / counselling which are with the help of a psychiatrist or a counsellor.

The reason that anxiety therapy is chosen over medication is because with cases of anxiety you need to treat the underlying problem that is causing anxiety in the first place. There are many aspects that can cause you to suffer the effects of he anxiety and anxiety affects people in many different ways but with the help of anxiety therapy / counselling you can start to tackle the issues that cause you nxiety in the first place.

Anxiety therapy /counselling is designed to change the way that you think so that you can deal with situations in a better manner. With anxiety therapy you will work through your problems one at a time. An example of a technique that is used to do this is to write your problem down and focus on the facts of the problem, not how it makes you feel. You will then, with the help of your psychiatrist or counsellor, come up with a list of ways that this problem could be faced. Once you have done this and gone into detail about it you can decide, again with your psychiatrist or counsellor, what is the best action to take in order to deal with your problems.

Anxiety therapy / counselling is one of the best forms of treatment when it comes to dealing with your anxiety problems so if you feel that you are suffering from anxiety it is important to visit your GP as soon as you can so that you can take the necessary steps to stop it.
