My name is Mark Weiss and I am a family physician in Toronto, Canada. My practice is focused on primary mental health care. I acquired the name counselling.com several years ago from a wonderful woman. The purchase was an interesting one because she wanted to meet me prior to selling me the domain name. I flew to BC and spent several days with her and I found her to be a kind and enlightened human being. I almost backed out of buying the domain name but I felt drawn to complete the purchase believing that I had made the journey to BC for a reason. At the time I bought the name I was not sure what to do with it but I did believe that at some point I would find a good use for it.

Recently I contemplated all the referrals I get from colleagues not sure where to send their clients for counselling, psychotherapy, meditation instruction, yoga therapy, addiction treatment etc. It dawned on me that there was no easily searchable database for psychotherapy, counselling and other modalities related to emotional wellness. If the database was to be comprehensive and cost effective, health care professionals would have to maintain their own information. To ensure that as many psychotherapists, counsellors, and other therapists submit a listing the site would need to be free.

It is my hope that Counselling.com makes it easier for people to find the emotional support they are looking for.
