Description Of Practice
I am the creator of counselling.com and although I am not taking new patients. I felt that I should have a prescence on the website so others could know who I am.
My approach to emotional wellness and healing is based on the wisdom of eastern psychology (often refferred to as a mindfulness based approach). The approach stems from the recognition that human suffering is inevitable but the degree to which we suffer from our pain can be lessened by examining and changing our relationship to painful experiences.
I may not be able to make my difficult boss change his attitude or wish away some traumatic event, but I can begin to identify what is important in my life. We might then consider the question, how does my current relationship to my painful circumstances get in the way of the life I wish to live? This reshaping of one's relationship to difficult circumstances and emotional pain can be found through many different routes. Mindfulness base therapies are simply one way to do this. Through discussion, journaling, experiments and meditative practices one learns to still the mind and free the soul to achieve a life of heart and value.
A great book that conveys the essence of this approach to healing is "Radical Acceptance" by Tara Brach. Radical Aceptance is a fusion of modern psychology and ancient wisdom that teaches us to meet difficulty with compassion.
Increasingly the teachings and psychology of eastern cultures as they relate to human suffering have been studied in major univeristies with positive outcomes. Mindfulness Based Cognitive Therapy and Acceptance and Commitment Therapy are two models of therapy which have arisen from this research into easten psychology.
Meditation is an integral part of this approach and yoga / tai chi are are also excellent activites which can help to quiet the mind and achieve states of mental calmness.
When our mind is not caught up in the past or future then it is grounded in this moment and better able to create the change necessary for healing / wellness.
